In 1904, the private Ueno School for Girls was founded by Zogoro Ishibashi. In 1951, the name was changed to Ueno Gakuen Educational Foundation in accordance with the Private School Law, and today, the foundation is engaged in a range of education, research, and social contribution activities with four schools and on research institute.
Currently, the Ueno Gakuen Junior College(Faculty of Music) is well-established institutions of higher education, and Ueno Gakuen Senior High School(General courses and Music courses) and Ueno Gakuen Junior High School(including Music Option) have been established to provide high-quality secondary education. The school has a small-group education system that caters to more than 1,100 students.
To govern one's own words and deeds, to awaken oneself, and to create oneself is to fulfill one's true calling as a human being.
Those who are aware of this must let their creativity grow and flourish through their fierce determination to freely develop their own individuality. From "Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Foundation," by Zogoro Ishibashi, in Sakura No. 27, 1929.
Since its foundation in 1904, Ueno Gakuen has sought to promote human dignity and freedom in education, and has developed as a center for artistic creation and research. The foundation of the educational spirit of Ueno Gakuen is "self-awareness" as taught by the school's founder, Zogoro Ishibashi.
A free spirit and self-awareness are the most fundamental elements in finding your place in, and contributing to, the world that we live in.
"Self-awareness" is the experience of looking deeply into oneself and knowing oneself from the inside, as well as realizing one's true value. It is important to first train the mind to seek this, and furthermore, seeking self-awareness must be a life-long task.
The educational ideal at Ueno Gakuen is to pass on this founding spirit to the next generation while making use of it in the present, and it is this universal spirit that has formed the unique academic culture and traditions of Ueno Gakuen.
Students should develop a strong will and intellect based on a strong work ethic, a deep sense of awareness, a kind and open heart, and the ability to look hard at themselves, while also maintaining good physical health and vitality. This was the ethos of Zogoro Ishibashi, the founder of the school, and the ideal of providing such a whole-person education continues at the school to this day, alongside the study of specialized subjects at the junior high school, senior high school, junior college and university levels.
Zogoro Ishibashi said, "Human beings must truly create what is most important to them as human beings, and they must have the skills and knowledge to do so. No matter how advanced the technology or learning may be, they are worthless unless they are based on what we are as human beings. We must never forget to always have this self-awareness"(from "Ueno Gakuen Gakuho No. 33").
In 1949, when Ueno Gakuen Senior High School became the first high school in Japan to establish a music department, its principal, Masue Ishibashi(later to become the Honorary Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ueno Gakuen), said, "I believe that it is important to develop people as human beings. Through music, we can develop human beings, and by developing human beings, we can create good music"(from "Ueno Gakuen Gakuho No. 5").
